The video below shows some film of the 1935 Newbury Carnival which is thought to have been taken by a Mr H T Cadd. This is a segment from a collection of films which was discovered in an attic and digitised by Yeovil resident Dave Smith. We are very lucky to have the films and Dave, who has no direct connection with Newbury, has put a lot of effort into transferring them into a digital format and making them available to Newbury residents -- Many thanks for all your hard work Dave! It’s delightful to see participants in Newbury Carnival obviously having lots of fun during what would have been King George V’s Silver Jubilee year.
Dave has discovered that Mr Cadd lived at the Jack Hotel in Newbury with his parents, who owned the hotel, before moving to The Bear Hotel in Hungerford. The Jack Hotel stood on the site of the current Marks and Spencer store in Northbrook Street. We and Dave would be delighted to hear from anyone who has any further information about the clip -- please email newburycarnival@gmail.com to get in touch.
