Photo Competition

The winning photo from our 2009 photography competition, which was taken by Richard Markham

Newbury Carnival Photography Competition

We are delighted that Newbury Camera Club will be running the Newbury Carnival Photography Competition this year.

Two cash prizes will be awarded from Newbury Carnival’s funds. These are

  • £100 cash prize and certificate for those aged 18 and over; and
  • £50 cash prize and certificate for under 18 year olds.

There will also be a highly commended award in each category with the winners receiving a certificate and an ‘I Love Newbury’ t-Shirt donated by Appleprint.

The winners will be those images that best capture the Carnival spirit of the day and have some artistic merit. Photographers of any ability can take part and we encourage you to do so.

Entries will be judged by a panel of photographers from Newbury Camera Club.

All photographs must relate directly to the Newbury Carnival event taking place on July 10th 2011.

Photographs can be taken on any type or make of camera or phone. Flickr will automatically reduce the size of large files.

Submitting your entries

We much prefer online digital submissions. These should be uploaded to the dedicated Newbury Carnival Flickr group to be found at: http://www.flickr.com/groups/newburycarnival/

This is easy to do. If you do not already have a Flickr account you create one in less than a minute or sign in using a Google or Facebook account. Instructions for uploading photographs are available at Flickr and this can be done via the website, by email or from your mobile device.  We have provided more detailed instructions for using Flickr and sumbitting your photos to the Newbury Carnival Group here.

You may submit as many photographs (no videos, please) as you like, but all photographs must have been taken by the person submitting the image and we do advise you to select the best photographs you take on the day, rather than uploading the complete contents of your memory card.

Note: This is a public group. Images must be viewable by all, using the standard Flickr methods to control visibility. If you don’t want your images to be viewed by anyone visiting the group, please don’t enter the competition.

If you are able to send pictures taken using your phone via Twitter during the day you can also use this method. Just include the hash tags #carnivalphotos and #Newbury in your Tweet and we will add them to the Flickr group for you.

If you are unable to upload photographs

As noted above, photographs should be uploaded to the Newbury Carnival group at the Flickr.com site whenever possible. However if you do not have internet access you may post a CD or DVD of photos to

Carnival Photo Competition, Ladywell, Speen Lane, Speen, Newbury, RG14 1RJ.

Mail entries must include an address for correspondence in the event of a winning entry, and the CD/DVD will not be returned.

Newbury Camera Club has very kindly agreed to upload photographs submitted via CD/DVD to Flickr so that anyone who joins the Newbury Carnival Flickr group can see them.

Naming your files

To be eligible for a prize, each submitted image must clearly indicate your name and the age section you are entering – either Junior (age up to 17) or Senior (age 18+). This can be done either before or after posting the image by using either the file name or the Flickr comments field. A typical image name might therefore be johnsmith1 jnr or janejones2 snr for example.

Notification of winners

Winners will be notified by email using the FlickrMail facility and by the Newbury Carnival organisers.

Questions

Any questions can be sent to the Newbury Carnival group Administrators via the Flickr site (once you have created your user ID), who will do their best to answer them.

Newbury Camera Club members will be running a stall at the Carnival Funfair and Fete in Northcroft Park, where you can find out about how to submit your competition entries, and learn more about the club and its activities.

Copyright

Copyright for photos submitted will remain with the person who took the picture but we reserve the right to use any submitted entries for promotional purposes. By entering the competition, the author gives Newbury Carnival and Newbury Camera Club an unconditional licence to use any photographs submitted for publicity for future events and on their websites, free of any charge. We will credit photographers whose pictures are used in this way by publishing their names on our website.
